Facilities and Resources
The Centre is based in the Buckley Building, opened in 2006 by the previous Chancellor of Oxford Brookes, the journalist Jon Snow
The building provides a focal point for research in the university, and contains a postgraduate computer room and a number of library archive collections. Facilities available to publishing students include a purpose-built IT suite with an interactive whiteboard and sound and video projection. All students have the opportunity to learn and use professional software such as Adobe InDesign.
- The IT suite has 40 full spec PCs with up-to-date software, including Adobe Creative Suite.
- Other computer facilities (some with 24-hour access) are available within Oxford Brookes University through Computer Services
- The Library carries an outstanding collection of books, journals and electronic resources relating to publishing built up over many years. Students have access to all relevant databases including Book Facts Online, the Bookseller, Business Source Complete, Fame, Global Publishing Information Reports, Logos, Mintel, Nielsen Bookscan, and Pirabase. Information about these can be found on the Library's subject help pages for Publishing
The Library also includes a number of special collections of relevance to publishing students and researchers:
Booker Prize Archive
The Library at Oxford Brookes has become the permanent home of the Booker Prize Archive. This is an extraordinarily rich collection of correspondence, records and press coverage of the most famous and influential literary prize in the United Kingdom. It offers unique research possibilities for students both of publishing and modern literature.
Books that Shaped the Century
This is a collection of over 100 books that were selected by the professional publishing journal, Logos, as being pivotal to the development of human life in the Twentieth Century. There is an annotated catalogue and a shadow collection of all the books in their English-language translations which is available on loan to schools and libraries.
Andre Deutsch Collection
Andre Deutsch was an extraordinarily creative and idiosyncratic publisher. The Andre Deutsch Collection consists of the first editions of the books he published over half a century along with illustrative memorabilia.
Publishing in Africa
The Publishing in Africa collection has been set up by the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies and Oxford Brookes University Library to provide an open research and reference source on publishing in Africa.
The basis of the collection was a range of books, journals, booklets and reports donated by the aid-agency, CODE Europe. This has been supplemented by donations from many other sources including the International African Institute, the Bellagio Group, Hans Zell, Heinemann Publishers, Macmillan Publishers. Funding to establish the collection as a physical presence was provided by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and an acquisition fund has been established with the help of generous contributions from Heinemann and Macmillan.
The collection would welcome further donations in cash or kind. It is also anxious to receive catalogues of publications from or about Africa.
Book Design Collection
The Book Design Collection has titles that are illustrative of design features such as typography, illustration and jacket design, including entrants and winners of the British Book Design and Production Awards, which are organized by Oxford Brookes University, the British Print Industries Federation and the Publishers Association.
