Alistair Burtenshaw is Director of Publishing Connections Ltd (www.publishingconnections.co.uk), a specialist consultancy that provides strategy and project management support to publishers, literary festivals, book fairs, cultural relations organizations and government departments operating in the global books and publishing sector.
A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and member of the Society of Bookmen, Alistair is also Chair of the Trustees of Booktrust (www.booktrust.org.uk), the UK’s largest independent literacy charity, which promotes reading for pleasure and administers national and targeted book-gifting programmes that distribute over 5 million books a year to children across the UK, advises on government policy and administers a host of prestigious literary prizes. Alistair is also President of Honour of the 2013 Paris Cookbook Fair (www.cookbookfair.com), taking place at the Carousel du Louvre, which includes the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.
A regular international media commentator, Alistair has spoken around the globe on issues related to the global books and publishing sector, with a special interest on emerging markets and digital disruption.
Alistair was Director of The London Book Fair, the world’s leading spring publishing event for over eleven years to September 2012 as well as Director of Books and Publishing (worldwide) at Reed Exhibitions from April 2011 until September 2012 during which time he had responsibility for the strategy and business development focus of Reed Exhibitions portfolio of leading book fairs in Europe, North and Latin America and Asia – which included The London Book Fair.
Alistair was also formerly a Trustee of the Book Trade Benevolent Society and an Executive Committee Member (Trustee) of English PEN, the founding centre of the global writers organization. He is also a former Management Committee Member of the Financial Times/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award and a former Chair of the KPMG Publisher of the Year Award. Alistair is a 2012 alumnus of Yale University’s Leadership Strategies for Book Publishing course and speaks English, Spanish and Italian.
