‘John Calder: A Life in Publishing’: Professor Alistair McCleery

Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies

Publishing Research Seminar

Taking Place: Buckley BG10 in Semester 2 2007

The publisher and bookseller John Calder cut his teeth in the 1950s and 60s, publishing avant-garde, experimental and controversial work from some of the twentieth century's leading writers, including Samuel Beckett, Marguerite Duras, Eugene Ionesco, Henry Miller and Williams Burroughs.  Always valuing the intellect above the wallet, never afraid to shock, and still publishing and bookselling today, John Calder has led a fascinating life in publishing.  Calder presents a very different mode of publishing to that of the multimedia conglomerates we have grown used to in recent years.

‘Touching Paper: the Post-Internet Bookshop’: John Mitchinson

Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies

Publishing Research Seminar

Taking Place: Buckley BG11 in Semester 1 2006

As the tail of the online inventory of books grows ever longer, what is the point of bricks-and-mortar bookshops? If we can choose our own favourites online, and often pay less for them, do we really need vast book emporia on our high streets carrying only a fraction of what's available? At QI we think it's time for a new model bookshop. Books are important. Every human activity finds its correlative in a book. Books change lives. They are tactile, moveable portals to an infinity of new worlds. Instead of dull warehouses, bookshops should become high street academies, enriching people with knowledge and leading the campaign to make the world more interesting. The adventure starts here...

‘The Elephant and the Rat: Innovation in Publishing’: Richard Charkin

Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies

Publishing Research Seminar

Taking Place: Buckley BG11 in Semester 1 2006

Global publishing is dominated by a handful of very large conglomerate companies: the ‘elephants'.  How do such big beasts respond to changing consumer behaviour and technologies?  How do big organisations remain innovative in the face of competition?  And how can they continue to create and sustain successful new business models?  Drawing on examples including the controversial Macmillan New Writing, Richard Charkin will address these challenges, asking how the elephant can make itself as fleet-footed and successful as the rat.

‘Editorial Reflections: Cultural Expression and Children’s Publishing’: Laura Atkins

Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies

Publishing Research Seminar

Taking Place: Buckley BG11 in Semester 1 2006

With immigration and multiculturalism dominating national debate, it is important to consider the implications of cultural diversity for the children's publishing industry. By 2010, one in five school children in the UK will be from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) backgrounds, a reality not reflected in the books currently produced. Publishing is a notoriously white, middle class profession, which inevitably affects the acquisition and editorial process for stories written by authors from outside of the dominant culture. In this talk, Laura Atkins will reflect on her experiences editing multicultural picture books, and discuss her research on how the publication process has affected children's books written by non-white authors in the UK.
