Greek publishing industry
Together with Christina Banou from the Ionian University in Greece, Angus Phillips has published a paper in Publishing Research Quarterly on the Greek publishing industry. The paper provides an overview of the publishing industry in Greece and suggests areas for further investigation. Topics covered include the structure of the industry and notable features of the book market, including the profile of publishers, the role of information technology, and national book policy.
The Greek market for books is small and as a consequence less attractive to international publishing groups. In 2006 around 9,200 new titles were published, of which over 40 per cent were translated titles. There were 730 publishing houses, mostly small and medium-sized companies, and many publishers remain family-owned enterprises. There are fixed prices for books in the first two years after publication, and there are around 2,000 bookshops in Greece.

Routledge and the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies held a reception on Monday 14 July 2008 to celebrate the publication of the fourth edition of Inside Book Publishing by Giles Clark and Angus Phillips. The reception was held at Headington Hill Hall, Oxford Brookes University. Many publishing professionals attended, together with Oxford Brookes alumni and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janet Beer.
Philip Pullman has agreed to be one of the new Fellows for Oxford Brookes' forthcoming MA in Creative Writing, and will be launching the course in September.
The new and exciting MA will bring opportunities for writers to develop their work across a wide range of genres, including screen writing.
Teaching on the course will be novelist James Hawes (A White Merc with Fins , Rancid Aluminium and most recently Speak for England) and poet Jane Yeh (Marabou and Teen Spies), as well as other Creative Writing Fellows who will be announced shortly.
Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies at Oxford Brookes University is busy dealing with a steady stream of entries for this year’s British Book Design and Production Awards which were launched in April at the London International Book Fair. Entries are already up on this time last year, and signs are that this year will be a bumper one.
Deadline for entries is Friday 27 June, and the winners will be announced at a Gala Dinner on 12 November at the Marriott Hotel in London.

Two students on the MA in Publishing programme have won scholarships to work at the World Bank in Washington for three months this summer.
In 2006, with the goal of broadening its talent pool, the Office of Diversity Programs and the Office of the Publisher at the World Bank in Washington created the World Bank Publishing Internship Prize, to be awarded annually to three students studying publishing. The winners each receive an award of $7,500, to cover travel and their living expenses during their three-month internship at the World Bank in Washington
Graduate Publishing Scholarships for 2008
The Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies is delighted to announce four new scholarships for students on the MA in Publishing programmes at Oxford Brookes University starting their studies in September 2008. The four new scholarships are:
- Cambridge Publishing Scholarship – award of £1,500
- Hachette Livre UK Publishing Scholarship – award of £1,500
- Publishing Training Centre Diversity Scholarship – award of £5,000
- Random House Group Publishing Scholarship – award of £1,500
RIBA Bookshops has announced the winner of the 2008 RIBA Sir Nikolaus Pevsner International Book Award for Architecture as Fabrizio Nevola for his book 'Siena: Constructing the Renaissance City' (Yale UP, 2007)
The winning books were announced on Wednesday 28th May at a prestigious
ceremony at the The Athaeneum Club in Pall Mall, London. The event was
attended by a large number of people representing the worlds of
architecture, construction, interior design and publishing. Speaking at
the ceremony and representing the awards juries were Max Fordham,
Dikkie Scipio, Doug Atherley, and Adrian Forty, who provided the
reasons why the judges chose the winning titles.
Also speaking was the RIBA President Sunand Prasad who described the evening as one of his favourite RIBA events of the year.
The Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies (OICPS) once again had a stand at the London Book Fair in April, following the success of last year’s attendance. It was an excellent opportunity to meet many of our alumni who were working with their own companies at the fair, as well as many of our publishing contacts in the UK and international industries. Current students were greatly in evidence, wearing OICPS T-shirts and distributing leaflets and brochures for our forthcoming Digital Publishing series of courses. Two students helped out at the stand for the Independent Publishers Guild. We were busy throughout the Fair and, for example, hosted two well-attended seminars on children’s publishing. Sheila Lambie and Claire Squires wrote articles for the trade journal Publishing News to coincide with the seminars.
At this year’s London Book Fair, two graduate publishing students worked with the Independent Publishers Guild (IPG). Jonathan Davis and Sarah Kulasek assisted with the stand and the meetings organized for members of the IPG with the major retailers. Bridget Shine, Director of the IPG, said about Jonathan and Sarah: ‘I wanted to let you know that I thought they were terrific—hard working and enthusiastic. The IPG stand is hugely busy and in addition to this, we organise meetings on behalf of our members with retailers. They both coped extremely well and I would hope they’ll get work experience with our publishers as a result.’

Pearson Education, a publishing company with local offices in Oxford, has been involved with the MA epublishing module here at Brookes for the eighth year running. Small teams of students worked on proposals for new online educational resources and developed prototype websites based on Pearson's Heinemann range of books.
At the end of the course the prototype websites were presented and in addition to each one being graded as normal, Stephen Fahey, Development and Technology Director, and Elaine Anderson, Head of Content Development, from Pearson were in attendance to choose first and second prize winners.
