Mediterranean Flavours at the OPuS International Evening

Warm-hearted souls from the Oxford publishing community braved the snow and ice to attend the Oxford Publishing Society (OPuS) International evening on Thursady8th February.
More than 70 people enjoyed Mediterranean food and drink, Spanish flamenco musicians (including a dancer), and a speech celebrating  OPuS’ 10th anniversary. In addition, the close links between OPuS and Oxford Brookes’ Publishing department were highlighted, as almost every OPuS event is held at a Brookes venue, and undergraduates and postgraduate students make up a good proportion of those who attend, looking for information, inspiration - and entertainment.

Publishing Visiting Speakers

Semester 2 sees a range of exciting visiting speakers lined up to speak at the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies.

Over the next few months, the Centre will be welcoming speakers from all sectors of the publishing industry - including trade fiction and non-fiction, academic, educational and magazines - to contribute to departmental teaching and related activities.  Among these speakers are:

Politics and publishing in South Africa

Logos (Volume 17, Issue 3) has published Politics and publishing in South Africa by Isabel Essery.  Isabel, who graduated with an MA in Publishing in 2004, conducted fascinating interviews with Marie Phillip and James Currey, both of whom were active in publishing opposition to the apartheid regime in South Africa.

Graduate Publishing Scholarships

The Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies is delighted to announce three scholarships for students entering postgraduate publishing courses in 2007-8.

The three scholarships available are the:

  • Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies Scholarship (Home/EU)
  • Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies Scholarship (International)
  • John Henry Brookes International Scholarship (International)

Publishing students produce Brookes Law Society magazine

The Oxford Brookes Law Society has just published the first edition of its magazine, Obvert.

Designed by Publishing students Ebyan Egal and Margaret Burke, the Editor-in-Chief of the Magazine is Abi Hiles, a Law and Publishing student.  The first edition of Obvert investigates serious issues including climate change and sexual offences.  It also takes a more light-hearted look at latest law social events and gives some tips for law exams.

The aim is to produce an edition of the magazine each semester.

Philip Pullman, Master Storyteller published

Claire Squires of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies publishes this week her book Philip Pullman, Master Storyteller: A Guide to the Worlds of His Dark Materials. The book, published by Continuum, is the first comprehensive and authoritative study of the great writer. Importantly, the book informs readers about the contexts, sources and influences behind the trilogy, and examines the controversies and debates that have surrounded the trilogy and its creator, since its publication. This book focuses on Pullman's central achievement with His Dark Materials, but it also considers his entire oeuvre.

John Mitchinson Podcast

John Mitchinson of the QI Club & Bookshop, recently spoke at the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies. John's seminar, entitled 'Touching Paper: the Post-Internet Bookshop', ranged from the place of independent bookselling in the age of the superstore and the online retailer to the calcium content of woodlice.  Intrigued?  His talk is now available as a podcast.

British Book Design and Production Awards 2006

Angus Phillips and Adrian Bullock from the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies were in attendance and presented the awards in the categories of Scholarly, Academic and Reference (won by Thames and Hudson) and Secondary Education (won by Philip Allan Updates).
